1938 Gar Wood 25ft Triple Cockpit Custom Runabout

The owner of Gar Wood’s, Garfield Wood, never intended to go into the boat building business. His goal was to personally set every speed record on water and be recognized as the world’s speedboat king. However, as he set forth to achieve these goals, he was influenced by colleagues and friends and as a result built one of the world’s finest lines of production wooden recreational sport boats. Today, Gar Wood boats are the most sought-after classic wooden boats in the world.

This 1938 Gar Wood, Annabella, is a unique example as it has received a full restoration with all new wood and materials and a rebuilt engine. This is basically a brand new 1938 Gar Wood built better than how the factory would have done it 90 plus years ago. After being built, this boat was delivered to Lake Tahoe and sold by the Gar Wood dealer at Obexer’s Boat Company, making it an original Tahoe boat.

For the current restoration, the hull work was done by Northwest Classics Boats in Auburn California. The seller purchased it at this stage as a project and had the engine rebuilt and installed by Sierra Boat Company. The boat then went to the Lake Oswego Boat Company in Oregon where the restoration was completed with no expense spared.

This Gar Wood features a no soak cold molded West System bottom that was installed by Northwest Classic Boats. The entire bottom of the boat was replaced including keel, chines, frames, and bottom planking, following Gar Wood specifications. Power comes from a Scripps 302 V-12 engine that was the largest engine option and the favored formula for making speedboats go fast in the 1920s and ’30s, a large displacement and low rpm power plant spinning a large propeller. The Scripps V-12 engine, model 302, is no exception to that formula. With a cylinder bore of 4.25 inches and a stroke of 5.25 inches, the displacement totals 894 cubic inches. The engine was said to produce 316 hp at 2,600 rpm.

Annabella is in new condition with the boat and engine never being used besides Sierra Boat Company’s assessment time for this listing. From the Scripps V-12 engine to the period correct original pattern and color leather upholstery, no detail was overlooked.

The boat sits on a 2014 Ryan Trailers dual axle trailer that was custom built for this boat and has been hardly used.

Don’t miss out on this opportunity to own a historical Gar Wood that is in new condition at the fraction of the cost of what it takes to restore a boat to this condition!
