1990 Gar Wood 33′ Baby Gar
Garfield Arthur Wood was one of America’s first “rock-star” industrialists. After inventing and patenting the hydraulic mechanism for dump trucks, he built Gar Wood Industries into a highly successful company. Following World War I, Wood acquired 4,500 surplus Liberty V-12 engines and founded the Detroit Marine-Aero Engine Company to convert them for marine use.
With these powerful engines available, he began producing the legendary 33-foot Baby Gar runabouts, luxury boats built for a select clientele who could afford vessels that cost nearly three times the price of an average American home at the time.
From these beginnings, Gar Wood Inc., formally established as the boatbuilding division in 1937, went on to have a lasting impact on American pleasure boating. Unlike many manufacturers, Gar Wood built boats out of passion rather than profit, allowing for an uncompromising focus on quality, engineering, and design.
Gar Wood boats are widely regarded as some of the finest ever built, beautifully crafted, exceptionally engineered, and finished with remarkable attention to detail.
The original 33-foot Baby Gar was the company’s first “production” model. Between 1922 and 1929, only 67 hulls were built. The first 22 were constructed by the Smith family of Chris-Craft fame, Gar Wood’s early race boat partners, while the remaining 45 were built by Gar Wood’s own company.
This particular example is a faithful recreation built in 1990 by the Turcotte Brothers, the exclusive holders of the Gar Wood trademark and the only builders authorized to produce Gar Wood boats.
Constructed using modern cold-molded epoxy techniques, the mahogany hull is fully encapsulated, resulting in a structure that is lighter, stronger, and easier to maintain than its original counterparts.
Power comes from a Chevrolet-based, marinized big-block V-8 paired with a reduction transmission. This setup delivers impressive performance while preserving the smooth handling characteristics of the original design, including the use of a large propeller operating at lower RPMs.
Tasteful modern upgrades include a hidden stereo system and a bow thruster, making docking and maneuvering significantly easier.
