1959 Chris Craft 19ft Silver Arrow

Back in the 1950’s, car manufacturers had discovered the beauty of fiberglass; it was light and easy to shape, yet strong and durable. Before long, boat builders realized fiberglass was ideally suited for their applications. At the time, Chris craft was the leading builder of pleasure crafts in America. They started to experiment with fiberglass in 1957 and made public in 1958 the Chris Craft Silver Arrow. The Silver Arrow used a fiberglass shell molded around a traditional 19ft wooden planked boat. The Silver Arrow was known for a pair of prominent fins on the transom which was inspired by the automobiles of that time. The unique futuristic construction as well as its sleek, stylish profile makes the Silver Arrow rare and desirable.

The Silver Arrow was built from 1958 to 1959 with a total of 92 hulls built. It has been said that about 30 still exist today. This 1959 Silver Arrow example is number 62 in the production line.

The Silver Arrow had about 20% more weight than the equivalent wooden boat due to the added fiberglass allowing it to perform better on rougher water for an outstanding cruising experience. The Silver Arrow also has anti-trip chines that allow it to bank into a turn better than most runabouts.

This 1959 Chris Craft 19ft Silver Arrow is powered by a Chris Craft 283 engine that was converted to a 350. It is showing an original 443.4 engine hours, so the hull has that many hours of use, but the converted engine has less.

This boat was bought new and has been in the seller’s family ever since. Always used in Lake Tahoe, it was restored 15-20 years ago and has a West System bottom with a glass overlay on it.  It won an award in the Concourse d’Elegance boat show before being put away for storage in the seller’s garage in Rubicon for many years.

These rare, stylish and uniquely designed boats are a head turner at any dock you pull up to!

    1964 Century 17ft Ski Dart – SOLD

    $9,450.00

1964 Century 17ft Ski Dart “Tweeter”

The Century Ski Dart ski boat was the prototype of the Ski Nautique and MasterCraft’s flat hull ski boat design. In 1964 they made only 60 Ski Darts with this being the 44th boat they built that year. The 180 hp Ford Interceptor V8 engine sends the boat thru the water at about 35 mph making it an excellent ski boat. The boat is 17’3’’ in length with a 6’11’’ wide beam and a center engine housing making it easy to walk around or to store a ski or swim ladder.

The sellers of this 1964 Century 17ft Ski Dart are the second owners. They purchased the boat in May of 1974 from the original owners who named the boat “Tweeter” after their last name, Birdsong. The boat has never been off Lake Tahoe and has been meticulously maintained and stored at Sierra Boat Co. since 1974. Sierra Boat has all records of work done to this boat.

Tweeter received a second-place trophy at the 2018 Lake Tahoe Concours d’Elegance and it has been said to be the only Century Ski Dart on Lake Tahoe!

    1965 Lyman 21ft – SOLD

    $39,500.00

    1965 Lyman 21ft

Founded in Cleveland, Ohio in 1875 and later relocated to Sandusky, Ohio, the Lyman Boat Works is known for building wooden, lapstrake “Clinker-Built” boats with legendary craftsmanship, unsurpassable utility, and steadfast seaworthiness in rough Lake Erie waters.

Lyman is one of the few truly great names in American boat building. Lyman Boats quickly established a regional reputation for quality lapstrake boats. The company expanded its model offerings and helped establish the “utility boat” as a favorite among the boating public. Following World War II, Lyman production expanded to more than 4,000 boats a year, giving thousands of Americans years of enjoyment at the helm of a Lyman.

This 1965 Lyman was fully restored in 2011/2012 by the famous Lyman restores Androscoggin Wooden Boat Works in Wayne, Maine. Androscoggin Wooden Boat Works specializes in the restorations of Lyman’s so this boat was restored properly with no details overlooked, http://www.androscogginboatworks.com/. All records from the restoration have been saved showing the complete refinish restoration as well as the install of a new PCM 5.7L HO 303 fuel injected engine with 330 hp. The records also show extras such as a custom covers, top rear and side curtains, gold leaf name, dual battery system, etc. The seller has over $75k in the restoration which the condition of the boat reflects.

This is a prefect turnkey Lake Tahoe boat that can handle the rough waters and the high-altitude sun!

    1967 Rio Super Colorado 28 – SOLD

    $250,000.00

    1967 Rio 28ft Super Colorado.

“Avionautica Rio” was then founded in 1961, building beautiful motorboats in mahogany with Chris Craft and Rolls-Royce engines along with striking model names such as Colorado, Paranà, Bonito, and Espera. Since the early 1960’s, Rio boats made from mahogany have been sailing the Mediterranean to reach every market throughout Europe. These motorboats were built with great skill and wisdom during a period that culminated in an agreement with Rolls Royce to build a model carrying a V8 engine, the ultimate expression of two prestigious brands. Check out the history at Rio Yachts, https://www.rioyachts.net/en/50-anni-di-storia/

The Rio shipyard was originally just down the street from the famed Riva shipyard. The influence of the Riva brand is evident in the Colorado, taking many styling clues from the iconic Aquarama. True to all things Italian, the Rio boats are highly crafted works of art. Rio’s should be seen as a different brand than Riva, just as Lamborghini is different from Ferrari, not inferior just different.

The example listed here is the only known to exist 1967 Rio 28ft Super Colorado in the US, and one of only a handful of Rio’s in this country. The “super” designation is due to the use of “Big Block” engines, in this case a pair of Chrysler Marine 440’s. It is not known how many Colorado’s were built, but it is estimated that the numbers were very low, and certainly the Super is rarer still. The hull number is 035, which assumes it is the 35th built.

Sierra Boat has been the primary caretaker of this boat since its restoration in the mid 90’s. It has been well taken care of and was recently completely re-varnished and the engines were totally re-built.

This is a perfect boat for Tahoe and capable of handling rough water with ease.

1969 Bertram 20ft “The Red Baron” – SOLD

    $38,500.00

1969 Bertram 20ft “The Red Baron”

This is the smallest in the Baron line of race boats. The Bertram name carries a great reputation in classic as well as modern boats as they are very well-built boats. This one in particular is one of a run of only of 20 or so in 1969.  In the mid 60’s racing was popular and boat builders were looking to dominate certain classes of boat lengths. This was a tried and true hull in the early 60’s known as the Mopie fishing vessel. It had great hull lift due to the heavy interior and overall construction.

Sammy James was the heavy hitter in Bertram Racing at the time and the current seller of the boat tracked him down in Florida some years ago. He asked him if he was familiar with the boat and Sammy James said “Familiar???? Hell son, I built them. You mean there are still some left?  That’s great.” Sammy James then filled the seller in on the boat. They basically stripped the Mopie and built this custom deck for the boat to go racing. The boat was a really great performer up to about 60 MPH and then it got a little sketchy. They lost about ½ the boats in testing and regrouped, sold the remaining boats (repowered with less power to control hull speed) and sold them off to recoup some funds for the next boat to test. They were powered with Holman-Moody engines and had Volvo outdrives of the period.

This boat was purchased in New York by Dick Clarke of Sierra Boat Company about 45 years ago and sat in the warehouse until Tony Brown of wood boat restoration fame bought it and it sat some more. The current owner bought it and proceeded to do a period correct refurb on it. It is not representing a restoration as there are original pieces that were not serviced or restored and the seller did take some liberties that are correct but upgraded.  He installed a period correct Volvo outdrive with outboard trim rams which is rare. He also built a Holman-Moody Ford 351 Windsor engine as this was for altitude.  It does 45 on GPS at Tahoe’s 6300’ elevation.  The boat comes on a custom trailer that was fit to the boat.

The seller has all the receipts since he bought it. This is truly a great collector’s boat that can be enjoyed and then restored with room for future profit on a sale.

    1990 Gar Wood 22ft Streamliner – SOLD

    $75,000.00

    1990 Gar Wood Streamliner.

This is a replica of the Gar Wood Steamliner model built in the late 30’s and early 40’s. Very few of those original boats exist, with only 18 produced. The best feature of these boats was the open cockpit seating, which was U shaped in the back. This was a much more practical seating arrangement than the typical 3 cockpit arrangement. The seating meant a vee drive engine arrangement, newly developed by Chrysler. The limitation of this arrangement was that the small Chrysler was not very powerful and performance was lacking.

In the 90’s the Turcott brothers started building replica Gar Woods in upstate NY. They still build them to this day. See garwoodcustomboats.com for more on this company. This 1990 Gar Wood Streamliner is one of the first models they began to replicate, now with modern power and performance. Add to this epoxy glued construction and you have a boat that is a vast improvement on the original. One change they made to the original is now the front two rows of seats have a walk-through, so the boat is easy to get around in. The walk-throughs have drop in bottom and back cushion inserts to increase seating if needed.

This example has spent most of its life on Lake Tahoe and has been professionally maintained.

    1994 Donzi Sweet 16

The Sweet 16 was the masterpiece of Don Aronow and the first boat offered by his company, Donzi Marine. Since going into production in 1964, with a gap in the late 1970s and early 1980s, this boat has been something of a little-known jewel. Its 50-plus mph top speed at sea level feels like a whole lot more, and with the type of handling only a small boat can offer, it’s incredibly fun to drive.

This 1994 Donzi Sweet 16 will turn heads with its red stripe on white color scheme. The gel coat on the deck and hull sides are in excellent condition. The white rolled and pleated upholstery with red welting is in excellent condition as well. Besides its undeniable good looks, the Donzi 16 was a sensation because of its performance. This boat is powered by a MerCruiser 4.3LX V6 with an Alpha One outdrive. The engine has low engine hours and has only been used in fresh water.

The current owners bought the boat in 2001 and have had it serviced and stored with Sierra Boat since. The boat got used for a couple runs every other year to keep it in an excellent running condition. This boat comes on a red 1995 Hoss trailer that has been stored inside year-round. The boat is protected by a full custom cover and a cockpit snap on tonneau cover.
