    T-44  Wild Horses – 1997 33ft Gentleman’s Racer.

The concept behind the creation of this boat was developed by Ken Bassett of Onion River Boatworks in Vermont and Tony Brown at Western Runabouts in California. They used the design of a 1920s-era Hacker-Craft named “Nick-Nack” as a basic blueprint – but many modifications needed to be made to accommodate the new engine and handle the power it develops.

The idea was to put a Rolls-Royce Meteor V12 tank engine into a speed boat. The Meteor V12 was a development of the legendary Rolls-Royce Merlin aero engine from aircraft’s like the Spitfire and P51 Mustang. The Meteor was developed for use in tanks, and it was so successful that it fundamentally changed the way tanks were designed. With a capacity of 27 liters (1648 cubic inches), no supercharger (as was used on the Merlin) and a power output of 650 hp, the Meteor proved both reliable and easy to produce – in fact many early Meteors were built from the remains of crashed Merlins.

The original boat, Nick-Nack, had been a major icon in its day. It was owned by Commodore Humphrey Birge of Buffalo, New York and it shattered the one-lap, 50-mile and 150-mile records at the Wood-Fisher race at Detroit, Michigan in 1921.

The Commodore’s vessel had a 200 hp Hall-Scott motor fitted – approximately 70% less powerful than the mighty V12 sitting in the new boat handcrafted by Brown & Bassett. The interior is upholstered from maroon leather and there’s a forward jump seat that is said to be for “brave passengers”!

T-44 is a one owner 33ft gentleman’s racer that has been meticulously maintained and comes on a custom-configured trailer for easy transport.

With a history stretching over a hundred years, the Hacker Boat Company, http://www.hackerboat.com, continues to craft the world’s finest mahogany boats. Hacker-Craft boats are hand built in America with some of the world’s finest mahoganies and materials available. Keeping the look of an early Hacker-Craft above the waterline, dramatic improvements have been made throughout, thanks to improved modern boat building techniques and materials.

This 1991 Hacker-Craft is powered by Twin V8 Chevy 350 small blocks. In 2017, both engines were removed from the boat to allow for a thorough clean and painting of the engine bay. They were stripped of all ancillary parts to allow for degreasing, cleaning and prepping for spraying. The engines were primed and sprayed with two coats of top coat. All ancillary parts were then re-fitted or replaced as necessary. New Holley Marine 4 Barrel carburetors were installed. Both engines underwent a full service and have been tested.

In October of 2017, this Hacker-Craft received refinish work. The deck and topsides were stripped and have new stain and fresh varnish. The bottom was re-painted with 2 coats of anti-fouling paint. The dash panel was re-sprayed as well. This boat is currently in excellent condition.

Hacker-Craft builds some of the finest, new construction runabouts around. Sierra Boat has a lot of history taking care of these boats and they are very well suited to Tahoe’s rough lake conditions. The designers at Hacker-Craft started with the antique Hacker designs of the 30’s and updated them for modern boating. The most notable feature of this model is the expanded middle cockpit. The original boats of this size would have had a three-cockpit configuration. The expanded cockpit gives the boat more seating and a layout that is easier to get around in.

Hacker-Crafts feature modern all epoxy glued construction. This means that they don’t need to soak up to float. It also means they are a much stronger boat and seam movement is virtually eliminated. They also feature a modern deep vee hull for excellent ride. This 2002 Hacker-Craft is power by a 5.7L fuel injected Crusader V-8. The boat also features a bow thruster for excellent maneuverability when docking.
