“Nine Lives” Gentleman’s Racer
“Nine Lives” is a 2000 23-foot Golden Era Classics gentleman’s racer.
The hull, designed by Marty Loken of Island Boatshop in Nordland, Washington, is based on a 1930s-era Ventnor race boat built by famed New Jersey boat builder Adolph Apel. From Loken’s design, Paul Dewhurst of Golden Era Classics in Australia constructed four cold-molded hulls which were then shipped back to Washington for completion.
“Nine Lives” is powered by a Jaguar V-12 engine. Originally designed in the 1960s for competition at LeMans, this racing engine has been marinized and, with guidance from Jaguar expert Bernard Juchli, general manager of Jay Leno’s Big Dog Garage, modified to produce 400 HP. The boat tops out at 50+ mph at 7600 rpm.
